  Chapter 1

  Jhyrah

“Turn on the lights. I'm lookin' for 'er too. I heard she keep her promises and never turn on you. I heard she ain't gone cheat and she gon never make no move. I heard she be there anytime you need 'er, she come through---”

“Oh, turn that up! That’s my shit!” my mama boasted, as she rocked to the beat, while riding shotgun in a Mercedes G-Wagon.

“Ole bopping ass,” My Auntie Paris jabbed, before increasing the volume.

I found myself laughing at everything, while riding in the back with my biological aunt Raquel. Paris was my mama and Raquel’s close friend, which was why I called her auntie, as well. Those three together was always a blast, as I often wished that I was their ages and could party with them. That’s why I always jumped all over any opportunity to hang with them. Today was one of those days, and I’d been laughing non-stop. Unlike some girls my age, my mama was my best friend, and I couldn’t think of a more exciting person to kick it with.

Strangely, my mama could bop with the best of ‘em and was still young and fine. She’d had me at fifteen, which made her just 29, while I was 14. Hearing that, most would naturally assume that we were some statistics, however, we were prime examples of what it meant to chase the American dream. My mama and daddy were legally married and had beaten the odds. Daddy was a king in the streets and had walked away from the game with millions. I would say that it was like a fairytale, but we’d experienced too much pain along the way to ever make such a claim. Nevertheless, life was good, as we spent most of our days searching for one adventure after another.

“Aye, yall got me hyped back here,” Auntie Raquel announced over the loud music. “Let’s swing by your club, Paris. I need a drink.”

My mama nodded. “Yeah, I could use a stiff one, right about now.”

“Bitch, Jah aint gonna be at the club, with ya nasty ass,” Paris jested, as she mentioned my daddy.

My mama playfully wagged her tongue. “Hoe, you know that’s not what I meant, but I’ma get that too. Right before my eyes close tonight. Trust.”

I frowned. “Ewe, mama, I am back here.”

She glanced back at me. “Girl, please. You’re fourteen. You understand at this point in life that I’m not a virgin. You know exactly how yall got here.”

“Ugh, don’t remind me,” I pretended to be disgusted. “But anyway, how are yall gonna go to Auntie Paris’ club with me in the car? Can I go too?” I asked, hopeful.

Auntie Paris shook her head. “You know sometimes I let yall come through when it’s still early, but not today. It’s too many niggas over there shooting dice. You don’t need to be around that crowd.”

“So, what am I supposed to do, while yall go there?” I pouted, while keeping my fingers crossed, praying that they’d decide to hang somewhere else.

“Well,” Auntie Raquel spoke up. “You have plenty of grannies, right in here in 5th Ward. You can go hang at Dorothy’s or Tiny’s,” she referred to her and my mama’s grandmas.

I rolled my eyes at both suggestions. Wasn’t nobody trying to kick it with the old lady gang.

“Yeah, and Trina’s,” Paris added. “You can let Jermany’s bad ass work your nerves,” she referred to her 10-year-old daughter.

I smirked. Paris’ mother-in-law was the coolest, and I usually had fun at her house. “Okay, I’ll go see Aunt Trina.”

My mama nodded. “Okay, well, Paris swing by there and drop her off.”

Paris made a sharp turn, heading to Aunt Trina’s. When we pulled up the house, I smiled. Auntie Trina had been living in the same spot forever. Recently, they’d knocked her entire house down, before building another one in its place. The new home was now two-stories and all brick. Basically, it was a castle in the middle of the hood.

Scoping out the driveway, I noticed that only one car was in the driveway, which was a rare occasion. The Wiltz’s family was huge, and Auntie Trina was a matriarch, therefore her home was often the meeting grounds for everyone in their family.

Before I could hop out of the car, I noticed Aunt Trina sauntering down the driveway. Jermany was right behind her, doing cartwheels.

“Girl---” Paris got out, as she noticed her daughter.

My mama was tickled. “Her ass has plenty of energy.”

“She’s just always extra,” Paris held, while I eased out of the truck.

“Hey, Ms. Trina,” My mama greeted. “Is it cool if Jhyrah chills here, while we make a run?”

Trina approached the truck. “Raven, you know you aint gotta ask that. She’s always good here.” she glanced my way. “Baby girl, you get finer every time I see you. My God. I’m old as hell aint never had a ass like that.”

My mama shook her head. “And it shows, no matter what she wears. It’s sad. Jahrein is always seconds away from losing his mind.”

I rolled my eyes, as they talked like I wasn’t standing there. Nobody ever allowed me to forget about how my body had blossomed. Even I knew that my body wasn’t like most girls my age. My waist was slim, but my booty was outrageous. My boobs were just handfuls, but my hips were wide, and I had thick bow legs. Being built at a young age brought about too much unwanted attention, so my daddy went out of his way to regulate the things that I wear, but it didn’t actually conceal anything. Like today, I was donning white distressed knee-length Bermuda True Religion shorts, along with a simple red and white racer-back True tee, and a pair of red and white Giuseppe’s sneakers. A red Giuseppe belt with a gold plate was wrapped around my waist. Having no choice in how my hair was styled, my mama had the back of my hair hanging in its naturally curly state, while the top was swooped into a bun. She’d even slicked my baby hairs down herself. I had custom made gold bamboo earrings with my name engrained in them, bringing my look together. I was dressed trendy and cute, but it somehow always unintentionally came across sexy, as my shorts fit like a second skin. If I’d worn anything looser then it would be too big for my waist.

I took a long stretch and yawned. “Mama, stop talking about me. I get this from you.”

“I know.” She bucked her eyes. “So, I know how you think. So, don’t ever, ever, ever try me.”

  “Okay, Raven,” I groaned.

“Raven? Little girl, what I tell you about playing with me?”

I giggled. “Okay. Yall hurry up, so yall can come back and get me. Oh…and bring me some fried shrimp, please,” I added, knowing that delicious food was served at Auntie Paris’ club.

“Okay, I got you, niece,” Paris promised. “But let me go before Jermany tries to climb in this truck, and I’ll have to drag her butt out.”

“Hey,” Jermany dramatically gasped, as Paris pulled off. “She’s always leaving people. I’m calling my daddy,” she pouted.

Auntie Trina waved her off. “Girl, go sit your spoiled-self down somewhere. You don’t have to follow your mama everywhere she goes.”

“Uh-huh, granny, I do,” Jermany insisted. “She might end u
p at the mall without me. I need a new Gucci purse.”

Auntie Trina shook her head. “My son and these little monsters he created. The hell do you know about Gucci?”

  “A lot,” Jermany claimed.

  “Anty, is the food ready?”

I spun around and noticed Chubby coming out of the house. He was a tall, slim, yellow boy with hazel eyes. A cutie for sure. He was Aunt Trina’s nephew from one of her brothers and was now living with her because his mama was in between houses with her three other kids.

“Yes, Chubbs, with ya greedy ass,” Trina tittered.

He stepped over to us. “Hey, young Jhyrah. What’s the business, baby?”

“Chubby, stop it. You’re young too,” I reminded him.

He looked me up and down, before licking his lips. “Not as young as you,” he uttered, before leaning in to whisper in my ear. “With your pretty ass. When you gon stop playing, and be my lil’ girlfriend?”

I giggled, as his breath tickled my ear. “Boy, quit it.”

  “I’m serious,” he insisted.

I stepped back, before Auntie Trina would end up having to say something. We all knew that Chubby was mannish, and I didn’t want her thinking that I was being grown with him. I never did anything in front of people who knew my daddy personally. Jahrein, my daddy, didn’t play, and would lose his mind if he thought that Chubby or anybody else was flirting with me.

“Chubby, get out of that girl’s face,” Auntie Trina chided. “She don’t want your seedy headed ass. All them buck shots you got probably got the girl scared.”

  I laughed heartily at that.

Chubby grinned. “You think that’s funny, huh?”

I shrugged, as I followed Auntie Trina and Jermany back into the house. As usual, it smelled good inside. Auntie Trina was once a booster and always had the best of the best in her house. She’d retired from the game, thanks to Paris’ husband Jay Rock, but nothing had changed. She still stock piled things, because there were several people in their family still hitting up the stores.

“I’m about to call the twins,” Jermany announced, as we sat on the couch. “They need to go get me some food. I’m hungry.” She whipped out her cell.

Auntie Trina cut her eyes at Jermany. “With all that food I just cooked? Really, little girl?”

“I can take that to go, granny. The twins need to feed me,” Jermany snobbishly insisted.

I laughed, because everybody called me a brat, but I had nothing on Jermany. She ran her daddy and brothers, and they never told her no.

“Girl, those twins are not about to stop what they’re doing just to cater to you,” Auntie Trina predicted.

“Well, we’ll see,” Jermany grumbled, as she texted on her cell. “Cause either they’ll come or my daddy will.”

Auntie Trina low-key rolled her eyes. “Whatever.”

“Anty, this pasta is the bomb,” Chubby stalked out of the kitchen with a loaded plate in tow. “Especially, these shrimps,” he talked with his mouth full.

“I see. You didn’t waste no time,” Auntie Trina tittered. “The damn steam is still coming from your mouth.”

“I know, but it’s good,” he continued to eat with his mouth open.

He flopped down on the couch, while Auntie Trina hopped up, with Jermany right behind her. They headed to the kitchen, while Chubby scooted closer to me. “Now, back to what I was saying. When are you gonna stop playing? You know I like your lil’ fly ass. And I’m tyrna scoop you up while you’re still fresh.”

“Still fresh?” I arched a brow, while my face held amusement. Truthfully, I liked the fact that he flirted with me. He was handsome, so I was flattered. He was seventeen, which was kinda too old, but that really wasn’t the issue. I definitely had my reasons as to why I’d never be his girl, but I’d flirt, anyway. It was fun, if nothing else, and I was bored. “You talk like a grown man, Chubby. Sounding like my daddy nem.”

He smiled. “I am grown, girl. Plus, I told Big Jah that I was gonna be his son-in-law. He knows what’s up.”

I pursed my lips, knowing better. “Yeah, right.”

“I’m for real,” he contended, as he gazed into my eyes.

“Jermany, come get these tacos,” a familiar voice commanded.

I glanced up, and saw the twins, Jeremy and Jared, swaggering in. They were Jermany’s big brothers, and Paris and Jay Rock’s sons. They were identical, but I could always tell them apart. They both possessed bowlegs, like their daddy, honey brown skin, deep wavy tapered fades, long lashes, tall, lean physiques, and kissable pink lips. The one notably difference whenever I’d see them were their eyes. Jeremy’s eyes had a certain slant to them that I never missed.

Jeremy held a bag of tacos in his hand, while pausing in front of the couch. His eyes landed on me, before wandering to Chubby. Then it felt like he peeped the little amount of space between us, as he frowned. Without really thinking, I scooted over a tad. I guess Chubby didn’t like it, because he glared at me.

Jared chuckled. “I see you, kinfolk. You and Jhyrah always up under each other.”

I sucked my teeth. “Boy, please.”

“Anyway,” Jeremy scoffed. “Where my lil’ sister at?” he glanced around.

“She in the kitchen,” Chubby spoke up.

  Jeremy nodded, before stomping off.

  Jared laughed. “That boy mad.”

  I frowned. “For what?”

He glowered down at me. “You know why, girl.”

  I shrugged. “I honestly don’t.”

He slid his tongue across his teeth. “Yeah, okay.”

“Anyway,” Chubby nixed our conversation off. “Where yall coming from, Jared?”

Jared sat on a recliner. “Around the corner, at my daddy’s game room.”

“Yeah?” Chubby rubbed his chin. “It was jumping?”

Jared shrugged, casually, which wasn’t a surprise. He was super laidback. Nothing ever really moved him, and I could relate. Our daddies had come up in the streets and were now infamous in the hood. They had property and businesses everywhere. Uncle Jay Rock had one of the hottest spots in the hood, but Jared didn’t see it like most people. Crowds of people, coming through to bop and dick-ride was the norm, so he didn’t get hyped about it. It was the same shit, just a different day. “It was the usual, man. Nothing too special.”

“No, shit? What whip yall daddy let yall use today?” Chubby wanted to know.

  “The Beamer.”

Chubby grinned. “That’s what’s up. You talked to ole girl…Holly?”

  “The one in 3rd Ward?”

  “Yeah, her.”

Jared leered. “The one with the friend you be talking to.”

Chubby dropped the smile. “You aint have to say all that, nigga.”

I giggled. “Chubby, you aint gotta front for me.”

Chubby shook his head, as he was caught in his game. “I aint fronting. I’m just saying. But anyway, let’s swing out there.”

Jared narrowed his eyes. “To the Cunney Homes?”

My ears perked, hearing them mentioning the projects I’d lived in once upon a time. I had been a baby when we lived there, but I could still vividly recall plenty. Besides, for years my parents would often go back and visit, so I knew several people over there, and they unquestionably knew me.

“Duh, nigga,” Chubby chattered. “Don’t tell me that you scared to venture out beyond where your daddy’s name protects you.”

Jared’s facial expression didn’t change. “Scared? Nigga, you call us, whenever these boys out there are getting on your ass. Don’t ever try to play me.”

Chubby waved him off. “Whatever, I’m just saying.”

  “You aint just saying nothing.”

“I’m saying, you wanna fuck somethin’ today or nah?”

Jared shrugged again. “Only if the head comes with it.”

I shook my head. The twins were merely sixteen and were more mannish than Chubby.

  “Alright, I’m shooting
them a text, right now.”

“You ready?” Jeremy questioned his twin, as he sauntered back into the room.

“Aye, Jeremy, we tryna fall off in somethin’,” Chubby offered.

“What?” Jeremy narrowed his eyes in obvious confusion.

Jared sighed. “That nigga is tryna swing by the Cunney Homes to see them girls we met at the Galleria. You remember? The ones that was stealing out of Saks.”

Jeremy scratched the top of his head. “Them lil’ hood rats? Yeah, I remember.”

  “So, you down?” Jared quizzed.

Jeremy shrugged. “I don’t care, honestly.”

For some reason, I rolled my eyes at his response. “Well, it’s boring over here, so I’m riding too.” I folded my arms underneath my breasts.

Chubby gave me a look. “Nah, you need to stay here.”

I placed a hand on my hip. “And why is that?”

“Cause…you never bring sand to the beach.”

“Tuh, boy bye. That definitely does not apply to me, because if I’m the sand, then you definitely don’t have me. You better tell them lil’ hoes that I’m your cousin.”

Jeremy squinted. “You sholl be cussing when aint nobody around to tell your daddy.”

I sassily rolled my eyes. “And? Aint it just like when you front like you aint a pussy hound when you’re around your mama?”

“Shut up, big mouth. With ya unoriginal biting ass. Coming through, dressed like me and shit.”

I giggled. “You wish. I know that you probably peeked at my Facebook, before you threw on your Giuseppe’s and True,” I jabbed, as I checked out his destroyed blue denim shorts that were clearly appealing to the eye when paired with his extreme bow legs.

“Yeah, okay,” he mumbled. “So, yall ready to roll out or what?”

“Hell, yeah,” both Chubby and Jared responded simultaneously, as they stood to leave.

“Well, let’s go then,” I yawned, as I scooted off the couch and took a long stretch.

Jared turned his head sideways as he gawked at my butt. “Oh. My. God. Jhyrah, Jhyrah, Jhyrah. Thank God that we aint really kin. Cause the thoughts going through my mind---”
